Florentine Politics (1300-1302)
Florence at this time was split into two rivaling groups of people. The Guelphs (or the Whites) and the Ghibellines (or the Blacks) fought back and forth for power over Florence. The Guelphs began with the power until the Ghibellines fought back and overthrew their government. Fighting between the two groups lasted until in 1302 when the Ghibellines beat the Guelphs by the support of Charles of Valois and exiled them from Florence. Dante was a Guelph which led to his exile in which he wrote his Divine Comedy.
